The Organisation has also been active in press commentary and in recent years providing reactive and proactive pieces for UK National Radio.

We would like to acknowledge the broadcasters who have given over air-time to the issues that matter to UK Consumers.

"We would like to personally thank all the broadcaster's from the Radio & Television Stations listed below; without their generosity of air-time, the issues that affect many of their listeners, would not receive the attention that it does - we thank each station for their commitment to Consumer issues!"

Below we list the range of commentaries provided by HolidayTravelWatch; this list provides a glimpse into our media activities since 2013 to the present day:

The discussion centred in on UK 'eco-taxes' such as the Air Passenger Duty which whilst it was trying to raise revenue, it was also seeking to dissuade people from flying. Frank was able to make reference to the HTW Holiday Standards Report and drew complimentary parallels with the featured survey. Frank however also provided a word of warning to some of the 'just married' practices and pointed out that obtaining extra services by deception could amount to a criminal offence in the UK; similar crimes exist in other destinations - there is a need for Consumers to understand that whilst some of these items may provide amusement, some hoteliers may not like being deceived!

News of the 'ground-breaking' decision in the courts against Ryanair was discussed on the drivetime programme. The case concluded that airlines could not reduce the limitation period from 6 to 2 years for flight delay compensation. Frank explained how this was not exactly ground-breaking because this decision had been made by the European Court of Justice 2 years previously! This was another attempt by airlines to reduce what they may have to pay out by trying to circumvent the law with terms and conditions! Frank also offered the rationale that this was not just about compensation for the flight delay but also the consequences of extra expenses. He provided an overview of rights along with an explanation of what amounts to the 'extraordinary circumstances' defence.

He also discussed the type of publicity being given to this review as being similar to the so-called '20 ridiculous holiday complaints' put out each year; often recycled again and again! Downtown Radio - Siobhan McGarry

Frank was in a radio debate with Sean Tipton, from ABTA, on the consequences of the FCO declaring that UK Holidaymakers should leave Tunisia. Frank listened to the oft repeated opinion that FCO guidance is what the travel industry rely upon because the FCO are the experts. An opinion was expressed that terrorism is everywhere and it has effectively become a fact of life. Frank disagreed with the blanket analysis; the Middle East & North Africa is an area suffering humanitarian crises along with extensive ISIL activity - he considered that on the question of risk you cannot treat these destinations in the same manner as for example the Dominican Republic or Spain - distinctions needed to be made for the benefit of Consumers. Frank repeated that the situation had been getting worse in Tunisia since the beginning of 2015 and the facts of this was detected by him and many other commentators and these 'incidents' were now widely reported in National Newspapers. Frank offered the view that there was a need to change the structure of advices and not to forget that the Travel Industry feed into FCO advices which makes it clear that they too hold valuable information on potential risks in destinations

Frank discussed with Siobhan the latest Euro Exchange rates against the backdrop of the Greek crisis. Frank revealed where he found the best rates and also highlighted the pitfalls of buying currency online - they also discussed how extra charges creep in through credit card use. Frank used his own personal experience to demonstrate how it was important to examine the terms & conditions of the banks, credit card companies and exchange rate providers and if you understood those, you could make the right decision for you. Frank also guided those people who may not be used to transacting online and suggested that they could still get a good deal via enquiries in the high street or online through companies they recognised. Frank also gave some indication of what holidaymakers were reporting about prices in Greek resorts.

He also spoke of how it was time for the travel industry to stop hiding behind the shirt-tails of the FCO because they too had useful intelligence which they could use in either their decisions about destinations or to guide holidaymakers; Frank thought that until these changes were made, holidaymakers were on their own!

In the aftermath of the Tunisian massacre of holidaymakers, Frank spoke to a number of Radio Stations around the UK to provide reaction to the news coming out of Tunisia. Frank expressed his support and solidarity to the Tunisian people and the families and friends of the victims and survivors, but called upon Governments and the Travel Industry to be more open and informative about the destinations that holidays were sold to. There was much discussion about the fear of travel, with Frank concluding that as Consumers we needed to investigate more of our destinations before we book.

26 June 2015 The John Guinn Travel Show Today Frank spoke with broadcaster John Guinn about HolidayTravelWatch, and the state of Travel for Consumers. We discussed Terms and Conditions, Consumer Financial Protection, The Package Travel Regulations, Flight Plus, Travel Companies relocating to other EU Jurisdictions and the new Package Travel Directive. Frank was able to provide in-depth commentary on these key issues and also shed some light on the key campaigning issues being led by HolidayTravelWatch
23 June 2015 BBC Radio Ulster Concern is rising over the financial state of Greece and whether that country will crash out of the Euro. Frank joined a panel and Consumer discussion with William Crawley on the BBC Ulster's Talkback show. Today we discussed the implications for intending holidaymakers to Greece and how the crisis might affect them. Frank thought that the situation with Greece will resolve itself and that we should not panic at this stage; he reminded the listeners that this 'crisis' has some way to go yet! The key was preparation; bring extra cash, split that cash between your travel group and challenge the tour operators to tell them what will happen should Greece leave the Euro. William raised the good point about security; Frank thought that this was valid, because in desparate times, people behave differently and it was the duty of tour operators and the UK Foreign Office to monitor and guide intending holidaymakers on that issue. One of Frank's concerns was that before the programme, he checked the UK Foreign Office Travel Advice for Greece. He found no reference to the crisis and what to prepare for, only advices about demonstrations and strikes; he asked the question, in the face of a lack of 'official' guidance, what is a holidaymaker supposed to do?
17 June 2015 BBC Radio Scotland Today Frank helped to examine the story about the death of a woman on a flight to Lanzarote. Despite having a Doctor on-board, the aircraft was not equipped with a defibrillator and was therefore in their opinion, not able to provide the full range of solutions to her patient. The inquest examined the circumstances of her death and held that the Doctor and the crew of the aircraft had worked well to help the woman but the Coroner expressed concern over the lack of vital equipment. Frank highlighted the perilous state of aircraft regulation which he considers suffers because little or no input is received from passengers or Consumer Organisations on a wide range of issues. He also did not think that there was a viable argument that the carriage of such equipment would make the airline less competitive. Frank called for EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency), the governing body for Aviation Safety in Europe, to spend less time talking with airlines and manufacturers and more time understanding the needs of passengers!
11 June 2015 HallamFM Radio Frank was asked to comment on the case which involves the Malaysian Mountain naked 'selfies'. He offered sympathy to the young holidaymakers affected and hoped that they would be soon released. He advised holidaymakers how they should prepare for holidays and the importance of research and in particular making sure that they were aware of local laws and customs! He also gave advice on how to deal with a situation like this; keep calm, show respect to those detaining you and make sure you speak to the local British Embassy as soon as possible. Frank has since tweeted the Malaysian Government directly calling for Compassion and their twitter account has 'favourited' his tweet!
8 June 2015 Downtown Radio Frank joined Shiobhan McGarry & The Cystic Fibrosis Trust to discuss the detriment experienced by those suffering with CF when trying to get Travel Insurance when they go on holiday. @CFTrust have done a startling survey which revealed, amongst other things, that 1 in 6 of their members travel abroad without Travel Insurance simply because the cost is either too high or they cannot get Insurance. Frank's contribution revealed that the CF problem is widespread across a number of illness types and he offered solutions to trying to find Travel Insurance but also called for those empowered to raise a 'Super Complaint' for these important Consumers!
3 June 2015 BBC Radio Ulster Frank was invited onto a panel discussion dealing with holidaymakers problems. The problems ranged from booking on teletext, cancellation because of an airline strike, the cost of changing a flight, purchasing gift vouchers between the ROI & NI and a query on lost luggage. The show was hosted by Linda MacAuley.
23 May 2015 Sky News Sunrise Stephen Dixon was interested to hear about the HolidayTravelWatch survey which revealed that 90% of parents thought that it was time for government to regulate the Travel Industry and to help make family holidays more affordable. Frank agreed that we live in a market economy and that we should expect price hikes, but, when measured against the way in which we work and the limits placed on us, price hikes caused parents much angst with some breaking the current school attendance laws. Frank considered that it was time for the Travel Industry to balance costs throughout the year and for government to recognise the 24% call for a Travel Ombudsman!
