Health preparations for your holiday

Before you go on holiday make sure that you read the brochure and check the facts relating to health requirements and vaccinations!  Remember, travel agents and tour operators are not professionally qualified to give advice!  Always seek travel health advice from your GP who will normally check with the World Health Organisation advices.  Advice can be obtained from M.A.S.T.A. (Medical Advisory Services for Travellers Abroad), or from the Travel Clinic at the London Hospital for Tropical Diseases.  Practical health advices include:

  1. Check out our section - Holiday Health Matters!
  2. Get a supply of necessary or regular medicines from your GP;
  3. Ensure that you have plenty of re-hydration sachets and anti-gastric illness medicines!
  4. Changes in food, temperature and climate can cause you to suffer from Travellers Diarrhoea, so don't forget to pack some anti diarrhoeal medication.
  5. Stock up with over the counter preparations from your chemist;
  6. Check what vaccinations you need with your GP at least six weeks before you travel;
  7. Check the advice at the Department of Health website;
  8. Check if your medication is legal in the country you are visiting;
  9. Pack your medication in your hand luggage;
  10. If taking medication with you, also take the prescription and a GP's letter;
  11. If travelling within the EEA (European Economic Area) make sure you have an European Health Insurance Card and supplement it always with travel insurance!  Countries in the EEA (European Economic Area) are: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK. Visit the Department of Health website for further details.
