I can remember when Madaleine McCann disappeared and the howl from the 'chattering classes' against this dignified family. At the time we cautioned against that kind of commentary and the need to examine the evidence in what had become an extraordinary situation.
Fast forward to 2013, and we now see much progress being made in Portugal about this little girl.
Spare a thought also for the parents and family of Ben Needham and their long quest to find their child.
These are the extreme cases that all parents hope that they will not have to endure. However, the issue of children's safety is not just confined to disappearence cases but can cover such issues as:
- The qualifications of those that run 'Kids Clubs' in resorts;
- Who is responsible for the running of those clubs;
- How children sometimes 'disappear' from those charged with their care;
- Grooming of young people by 'friendly' hotel staff;
- The unwanted attentions given to young people by cruise ship staff;
- The response of the hoteliers, cruise companiues, tour operators and local authorities to these and other serious issues.
We have long advocated that holidaymakers should be ever vigilant and question how services are provided for children are run.
