Essential holiday reading!
The Hot Issues Travel Blog provides regular comment on travel related issues, often arising from holidaymakers’ concerns and complaints. Subjects covered range from holiday illness and hygiene standards through to risk destinations and Aerotoxic or Cabin Air Quality.
This summer has been peppered with complaints from anxious parents who having booked a holiday with precious little resources, find that because they have not paid for allocated seating, that they are separated from their child or children by up to 10 rows on an aircraft. We are not generally talking about adolescent children, but of children whose ages range from 2 to 5 years! The implicatio... READ MORE 5 August 2015
I try; I really try not to be too negative or to be overly critical, but sometimes you just have to speak out! This is one of those times! The situation in North Africa is dire and Greece presents uncertainty, so now is not the time for feint-hearts; those that need to be challenged should be prepared to meet that challenge openly and constructively! However, when I do raise issues, I am ofte... READ MORE 14 July 2015
Following on from our Checklist for Greece article yesterday, this fast moving situation will require updating as matters develop. It will also require updating as and when we hear from holidaymakers about what the situation in Greece is like. This latter point is important because I have recently been discussing this issue on the radio along with travel industry spokespersons. Those interviews... READ MORE 7 July 2015
Since 2010, there has existed an European Regulation which gives rights to Ferry Passengers. This last 2/3 weeks I have been following the various commentators providing their take on the Greek Financial Crisis. I went through a UK airport the other day and of the... READ MORE 6 July 2015

I have however been holding my breath for sometime. I have been watching the nightly news of the terrors taking place along the Mediterranean coast of North Africa and witnessing the unfolding of a Humanitarian Nightmare. In... READ MORE 26 June 2015
We have been receiving an increasing number of calls for some time from holidaymakers who have been allocated seating away from their young children on aircraft. You cannot understand the logic of either holiday/airline contact centre staff, check-in staff or cabin crew, who somehow see no risk attached to children being seated some distance away from their parent’s or guardian! Airlines will... READ MORE 17 May 2015
As destinations become more diverse and accessible, so too does the potential ‘risks’ that face UK holidaymakers! Many holidaymakers are attracted, understandably by the gloss of the holiday brochure and the promise of sun-kissed days away from the drudge of ordinary life! Travel Companies are always crying that holidaymakers need to take responsibility for their own safety! As we have seen dur... READ MORE 15 May 2015
Dear: Commissioner Bulc (DG Mobility & Transport); Mr Ky (Executive Director – EASA); The UK Secretary of State for Transport; The Right Honourable Patrick McLoughlin MP or his Successor; and Mr Andrew Haines (CEO - UK CAA) I have had the pleasure of meeting with colleagues from both sides of the Cabin Air Quality divide in Brussels and realise that more now than ever, the opposite end...
